Android Wi-Fi Tethering
This program enables tethering (via Wi-Fi) for "rooted" handsets running android (such as the Android DevPhone 1). Clients (your laptop for example) can connect via Wi-Fi (ad-hoc mode) and get access to the internet using the 3G, 2G mobile connection which is established by the handset.
The term ‘Tethering’ refers to the sharing of Internet connectivity of a mobile phone with other devices. This sharing can take place through Bluetooth, wireless LAN (Wi-Fi), or even by physical connection using a cable. When tethering takes place through a wireless LAN it is technically called as mobile hotspot. In this case, the Internet connected mobile phone works as a portable router by providing tethering services to others.
Many mobile phones features advanced softwares to offer tethered Internet access for other devices. The operating systems Windows Phone 6 (built-in starting from version 6.5), Android, (starting from version 2.2 Froyo), and iOS (only after jailbreak or running iOS 4.3 iPhone 4 and iPhone 4s without jailbreak) support this.
Some of the features that have been disabled by some operators can be re enabled only by 'rooting' devices, using the Linux iptables application. Even the latest Android OS, Android Ice Cream Sandwich, is equipped with tethered Internet accessing capability. Some of the operators however have asked the mobile producers, to remove this service.
Tethering is available as a downloadable "Wi-Fi hotspot" application on most Symbian mobile phones as well as on the MeeGo platform.

For operators Wi-Fi Tethering means more mobile data income. As internet connectivity is now available using the Wi-Fi connection, consumers are expected to love it more. As a result, it is expected that they will actually upgrade their data plans to fixed monthly high-speed subscriptions.
Wi-Fi Tethering can be used for differentiating between the smartphones. It is offered in Nokia S60 Symbian environment and Windows Mobile, but it seems that both iPhone and Android do not carry this capability in their platforms.
The new N97 Nokia is announced to launch with the Wi-Fi Tethering application JoikuSpot embedded in the device itself.
“It lets [smartphone users] always have the Web with them without taking any extra equipment along," says Allen Nogee, research director for wireless technology at market intelligence firm In-Stat.

Believe it or not, Google engineers were thoughtful enough to include an easy way to tether your Android-based SmartPhone to a computer and share the Internet through your data plan. Most folks think you need a special app for that, but this free feature already resides on your Android phone. Your Android mobile phone can behave as an external network interface usbN, connected via the USB infrastructure. The usbN interface is in turn connected to the mobile phone LAN, providing dhcp server, DNS server, gateway and so on.
That's how your mobile phone can provide an Internet connection to another device.
Android phones are already equipped to provide this functionality. Simply connect the USB cable and go to Settings -> Wireless settings -> Tethering -> Tethering USB.
This app monitors the phone USB port. Whenever the phone is connected to a computer or laptop via a USB cable the app automatically turns on USB tethering, optionally after confirmation by the user. USB tethering is available since Android version 2.2 but it takes quite a few annoying taps on the phone screen to turn the feature on. Auto USB Tethering automates all these manual steps. Just connect the phone to your laptop and you are instantly connected to the Internet from the laptop over 3G/4G network.
Wi-Fi tethering is suboptimal for such a use case. Since Wi-Fi tethering drains battery very fast, you would need to put the phone on a charger one way or another (AC or USB) and USB connection is way faster and more reliable then Wi-Fi.
USB tethering works well with all recent versions of Windows and Linux. It does not work with Mac OS without 3rd party driver.
AziLink is an application that allows USB tethering for Android-based phones, without requiring root access. It works by using a Java-based NAT that communicates with OpenVPN on the host computer. It's been tested on MacOS, Windows, and Linux. The connection will be forwarded over the phone's active network service, which can be either WiFi or 3G/EDGE.
